| Sonoran advances to semi-finals! On Sunday, April 23rd, the Sonoran defeated the United Serbs 2-1 (shootout 5-4). The game ended with a dramatic shootout with each team scoring their first four penalty shots. On the the fifth set of shots, Coach George Nemeh made a goalie change back to Mate Kozul; this move disrupted the United Serbs' fifth shooter enough that he missed wide. Hays won the game for the Sonoran by sinking home their fifth penalty kick. Once again, the defense came up strong, keeping the United Serbs to only 1 goal while once again protecting a non-keeper (Mate Kozul) who had to step in big to help the team. The rest of the Sonoran did their part by controlling the game, but just missed on many opportunities including a penalty kick during the game. This Sunday, April 30th, the Sonoran will have a semi-final rematch vs. the Big Ballers at 10am. On April 9th, the Sonoran and Big Ballers played to a 0-0 draw, so come out a support the Sonoran this Sunday for what looks to be an intense matchup.
Sonoran finishes regular season strong The playoffs begin on 4/23/2006 and the Sonoran are ready. They finished the season with a dominating win over the United Serbs followed up by a scoreless draw with the Big Ballers. All of this was acheived without a goalie. On 4/2/2006, the Sonoran defense made up of Milovan Lazic, Ricardo Pena, Pendic Drazenko, and Eric McIntosh held the United Serbs to only 2 shots, and they were not even great opportunities. Michael Micco, stepping in for the Sonoran's missing keeper touched the ball only 6 times during the whole match. On 4/9/2006, the same defensive team again plus Hays held the Big Ballers scoreless. Early in the game, Micco made a great save on a solid shot by one of the Ballers forwards, and McIntosh cleared the rebound. This key stop powered the defense for the rest of the way. The Big Ballers are a new team to the Scottsdale league and finished the season with the top points in the standings, so tying them without a real keeper showed amazing teamwork and strategy.
